How to export mobile power supply/lithium battery by air

Mar 29, 2024

DG (Dangerous Cargo), that is, dangerous goods. Common DG goods include mobile power supplies, lithium batteries, electric vehicles, scooters, balancing vehicles, solar power generation systems, etc. How should these goods be exported by air?

IATA has classified PI965 (IA/IB) goods as dangerous goods. PI965 is divided into IA (power exceeding 100WH) and IB (power less than 100WH). IA needs to be packed in UN boxes, with a single piece not exceeding 35KG; IB ordinary cartons are enough .

The most important feature of DG cargo is that it can only be transported by cargo aircraft (and can only be exported from Hong Kong, and the mainland cannot carry such goods).

Airlines exporting according to this method currently mainly include PO, RU, OZ, KZ, ZP, 5S, WE, 5Y, KE, K4, which mainly radiate to Europe, the United States, the Middle East, India and Pakistan, South America and parts of Asia.

Specific packaging requirements for DG cargo:

1. The box must be new and hard enough, without any wrinkles or damage.

2. Do not put any labels on the outer box (marks are acceptable). All battery labels, UN marks, etc. are affixed in the HK warehouse.

3. A single piece cannot exceed 10KG. (PI965 IB).

4. Make it into pallets/cardboards before delivery to avoid damage to the boxes during transportation (the HK warehouse does not have so many boxes to replace).

5. If the power exceeds 100WH, it must be packed in UN boxes, and the single piece should not exceed 35KG. If you exchange it for UN boxes in HK, it will cost 120HKD/piece. Unit price +2HKD/KG.

6. If the goods arrive at the HK warehouse, the boxes and pallets are damaged. It costs 50HKD/piece for ordinary cartons and 350HKD/piece for pallets (plus handling fee 350HKD/ticket).
